Information Management

G&A utilizes a series of processes and tools to create a system for the management of qualitative data that is unique in its high levels of rigor, transparency, and accountability. Our three-part Information Management system includes:

Data Collection: G&A utilizes mind-mapping software and projection instead of more commonly utilized flipcharts and hand-written notes (although flip charts and stickies remain tools of our trade!). We often serve as an information manager, entering participant input into the mind-mapping software. The projected image is easily manipulated to reflect discussions and it serves as a visual organizer for key points etc. as flipcharts normally do. However, unlike regular note-taking, the participants also see the Information Manager’s notes as they are entered, ensuring they are accurate and reflective of the input. This mind-mapping technique brings a higher level of rigor and accountability to the capture of discussions. It is projected in real time so that all attendees can view their contributions; further it is easy to develop themes and sub-themes and participants are involved in how the data is organized. Typically, the use of this methodology leads to greater buy-in and retention of decisions/actions/recommendations made by the group.

Data Analysis: The workshop data files (mind-maps) are saved as Word files and imported directly into database software. The software maintains the integrity of both the text and graphics of the original files (that participants observed in their sessions), while allowing the G&A consultant to organize into themes and do a comprehensive analysis.

Reporting: G&A consultants then use the software-generated reports as the basis of their final reporting. Our reports are designed and organized for easy use. We organize the content in every report to reflect the logic of both the input and the intended use of the report and supplement the content with graphics and layout that reinforce the logic and ease of use of often-dense content. Consolidated reports and executive summaries are prepared from this analysis.
